Spring is traditionally seen as a great time to do a big clean up at home. But that also applies to outside as well as inside.

Following good maintenance procedures is the best way to protect your home and keep its value in good stead.

Although inspecting your home should be done on a regular basis, spring is traditionally the best time to get your property ready for the summer.

A good clean inside is essential from checking radiators to putting away thick coats and winter jumpers but don’t forget to also assess the winter damage.

Spring is the best time to rid your gutters and drains of debris such as leaves and twigs.

Start repairs and prepare for warmer months with these 5 useful tips:

1. Clean out your gutters. Remove large debris like leaves and twigs and use a hose to remove all small debris that may have accumulated. If the gutter is not draining properly, then feed the hose down it to dislodge any potential stuck debris.

2. Inspect gutter downspouts for damage and remove any potential damaged downspouts.

3. Test smoke detectors around the house and change their batteries. Also check outside security systems and alarms for winter damage.

4. Inspect the roof for damage. Look for damaged or missing shingles or tiles but also look out for damage to wood that may need sanding down or painting. You can also check damage to vents and skylights.

5. Trip back overgrown trees and cut back any trees or bushes overlapping onto the roof or even touching the house.
