What The Owner SaysBeautifully positioned just a stone's throw from the affluent seaside town of Whitstable is Red Gables, a handsome Edwardian family home that in the past few years has been stylishly yet sympathetically renovated throughout. ?We used to cycle past the house virtually every weekend and we'd always admired it,? says the owner. ?It's such an imposing house, which enjoys a fabulous location just a short walk from the beach, the town, the station?it's a perfect setting.??For many years the house was owned by the church who used it as a holiday home for disadvantaged children from London, so inside was a maze of small rooms and the chapel at the back still had the altar and the pews. We've since made some quite significant changes to the layout by knocking through 4 separate rooms to create one huge, open-plan kitchen, dining and living space. Stud walls were taken down to make bedrooms larger and the chapel has been transformed into a beautiful living room. We restored the vaulted ceiling and it looks more like a chapel now than it did before. The work we've done has made the house much more conducive to modern living, but we've also tried to maintain the building's original character and charm, so features that were missing have been reinstated and those that survived have been restored and enhanced. Many rooms have individually designed cornicing matched and fitted to those that would have been in the house originally. We've tried to strike the perfect balance between old and new.??The house offers modern, flexible living, with all the buildings wired for commercial internet provision. The house offers amazing views of the Swale Estuary, Whitstable and beyond.??Redesigning the outside space was another huge project, but we now have a very attractive and large family-friendly garden. We also built a huge double garage, which incorporates two studios, and on the other side of the house an old collection of rather ramshackle buildings have been converted to form an additional detached two-storey studio along with a recently-added outdoor shower room.??Living in one of the most prominent houses in the area has been an absolute privilege and I feel that the work we've done has breathed new life into this lovely old building. The location is absolutely outstanding, ideally situated for a walk, jog or cycle along the seafront, morning coffee in any of the amazing coffee shops in town, or supper, from fish and chips on the beach to any of the acclaimed restaurants in the area. We can walk to the beach, the harbour and the town but when the tourists descend we feel nicely removed from the hustle and bustle of things. It's been a fantastic place to live and I know we're going to be very sad to leave.?
