Herne Bay is a seaside town on the Thames Estuary, with a population of over 35,000. The town began as a small shipping community and rose to prominence as a seaside resort during the early 19th century after the building of a pleasure pier and promenade.
Herne Bay has good transport links. The railway station is on the Chatham Main Line, travel time to London Victoria is around 1 hour and 40 minutes. By road, the A299 Thanet Way runs past the town and links to the M2.
The town has its own modern secondary school, Herne Bay High, and a junior school, as well as numerous village schools in close vicinity.
The town is a popular destination for water sports such as sailing, rowing and yachting.
